During the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big conflict in the US. Black people were segregated from white people in things like water fountains and bathrooms. Black people wanted to have as equal rights as white people. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an influential leader for the Civil Rights Movement. His death in 1968 caused anger throughout the US.
The Olympic Project For Human Rights (OPHR) was project put together to stop racism in sporting events. It was founded by Harry Edwards in 1967 to boycott the Olympics in 1968. They worked with people like Martin Luther King Jr., Jim Brown, Bill Russell, and Jackie Robinson. John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fist on October 16, 1968 in Mexico City for human rights and the OPHR.
