Carlos and Smith got expelled from the Olympics and a lot of people around the nation weren't happy with what they did. There were also people that were happy with what they did. The Olympic Committee was very mad at Smith and Carlos for doing the protest. A lot of their teammates supported them after the protest because they were happy they stood up for themselves.
Carlos' family received a lot of hate after the protest. His wife Kim committed suicide in 1977. Carlos and Smith were receiving death threats. Carlos tried out for professional football but he didn't make it. He became a counselor at Palm Springs High School and later retired.
Smith tried out for a professional football team too, but he did not make it. He became a coach at the college, Saint Monica. He retired and is still retired today.
At the 2008 ESPYs they received the Arther Ashe Courage Award for having the courage to fight for their rights. There are statues of them doing the salute at San Jose State, and at the Smithsonian Museum. Recently on November 1, 2019, they both got inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame. The ceremony was on November 1.
