The Race

In the Olympics John Carlos and Tommie Smith both ran in the 200. It was a tight race between Carlos and a white runner from Australia named Peter Norman. Smith ended up with the gold medal and Carlos got a bronze medal. Peter Norman got the silver medal beating Carlos. Tommie Smith set the world record for the 200 meter race.

After The Race

When the race was over, when Carlos and Smith were on the podium they raised their fists during the national anthem for human rights. They broke the equality barrier because they protested for equality.  Peter Norman wore an OPHR button to show his support for human rights. Standing on that podium with Carlos and Smith destroyed Peter Norman's career. Carlos was also mad about Mexican students getting killed peacefully protesting during the 1968 Olympics. They were protesting because people were going hungry in Mexico and Mexico was using money on the Olympics and not that problem.
